frederick hayes.

Dboct29

I'm loving these simple, graphite studies by frederick hayes. Cityscapes, architecture, geometry. They're modern and powerful in their narrow scope in both subject matter and medium, and oh so pleasing to view because of it. Love them!

A few weeks back I posted about michael brennand-wood who's layered assemblages and 3 dimensional forms make the heart sing. Well since then he's launched his own site where there's plenty more where that comes from. Enjoy!

doerthe fuchs and georg dobler.

Doethe_fuchs1

Here's a contemporary jewelry show at flow gallery I'd love to have seen. This top piece, which makes my heart skip a beat by the way, is by doerthe fuchs and uses wirework and semi precious stones to create its exceptional form. The stunning brooches below are by georg dobler and feel so modern and fresh in their play with scale and color. Both are so strange and glamorous at the same time! Total fabulousness abounds here as far as I'm concerned!

john herschend.

9_waving_and_drowning

Oh the softness and mystery of the work of john herschend is so lovely.  I feel like I'm floating a bit, somewhere between consciousness and dreaming.  I love the quiet mood of this work and find myself drawn into what feels like a story.  Are these abstract marks on the canvas or symbols from a private language?  I'm not sure but they've got my attention, which is always a good thing in art!

Aren't these geometric paintings by richard schur lovely?  I'm so grooving on their color palettes!  Fresh and a bit odd, because of the compositions and the simplicity of the geometric motifs, this work is all about color for me.

I'm really liking these paintings by benjamin long.  Rich and colorful, layered and patterned the story they tell is at once hidden and revealed.  And of course I love the botanical subject matter, realistic and not, all at the same time.  There's a great energy derived from all these tensions, bright, bouyant and strong.  Lovely, lovely indeed.

artful science.

Micsldes

Did you see these amazing photographs of microscopic slides at jen bradford's studio blog? They look like contemporary assemblages rather than old scientific studies, but there you have it, that's what they are. So beautiful, so strange. I so love it when science becomes artful and art is presented like science. To see more of these gorgeous images check out the original source at the nonist

I am loving these photographs by ingrid boberg. The color, the compositions, the use of pattern and then of course, the birds. Happiness on so many levels here! Good morning sunshine!

Risafukui03

Aren't these contemporary papercuts by risa fukui amazing? The intricacy and skill of the crafting is undeniable, fluid line work and powerful movement give this work a rich depth. And then there's the unique use of color, black paper vs. white and dark, moody colors to create a distinct and surprising palette. Some of the subject matter is just plain gorgeous, other stories are far darker and more ominous. Which is to say that this artist's work pushes so many boundaries of what I've at least come to think of as papercutting. I love it when that happens!

ngoc minh ngo.

Roses3

I'm such a sucker for a beautiful rose so not surprisingly I'm also a sucker for a beautiful photograph of a rose. Like these stunning images taken by photographer ngoc minh ngo. They are perfection pure and simple. It's no easy feat to capture the image of a flower in it's natural garden surroundings. There's always something odd in the background or the lighting is wrong or the wind blows just at the moment you take the picture. So the amazing photograph above impresses both technically and aesthetically. And then the one below, of a bouquet, freshly cut and a part of the clutter of everyday life captures the sentimental and pleasing reason one grows roses in the first place. I mean come on, is there anything more lovely than that?

These screen prints from tory franklin are wonderful on many levels. The layered patterning and amazing color palettes are what immediately catch my eye. And then the stories, the motifs that seem to be part of a much larger narrative start to tug at the imagination. Aren't they just magical?

Bird_head_ii_em

I'm loving these mixed media pieces by mary o'malley. Loving I say! There's a wonderful tension between the simplicity of a very open ground and the richly embellished bird motif. And what about those luscious, rich colors? Hot pink, gold, brown, olive green. Oh my, my, what a tasty treat!

christopher david ryan.

Wow. That's all I have to say about the amazing work of christopher david ryan. Well, and also that his compositions, his very particular and fresh visual language and his color palettes are perfection. Well, and also that his range of hand and modern design intelligence make his body of work compelling and relevant as a collection. Yeah all that, and wow too!

I really like these acrylic paintings on paper by laura fayer. The layering and transparency is intriguing, with a lot of strong motion defining the textures and patterns. And I especially like the color palettes, cool and rich at the same time. Lovely.

Cykloper_i_morker_medium_1199894503

I'm seriously grooving on the amazing jewelry by petra mandal. Oh my the shapes, the wonderful mix of materials, high and low, and can we talk about the colors. I love the plastic-y matte of the pastels juxtaposed with the sparkly and sharpness of the semi precious stones. This work is so magical thanks to all the contradictions, brought together by a skilled hand and sensitive eye.

Look at this fantastic blanket I recently found on reference library the other day. My goodness what a piece of art, practical yes, but stunningly beautiful nonetheless. I love it when something so utilitarian can also be so inspiring!

Kokoromoi_120_template

I don't think I could ever actually do something as dramatic as these wonderful murals from bonbonkakku in my own house, but that doesn't stop me from loving them just the same. Bold, graphic and ever so fun, I think they are just so very fabulous nonetheless!

dennis ichiyama.

Wood_and_type_3_2

Look at these amazing prints by dennis ichiyama. I totally love the use of lettering, layered and stacked to create abstract geometric forms that hint at words but are unintelligible if in fact they are words. And don't get me started on the color. So beautiful, so rich. I think these prints are just remarkable.
